His practice was devoted largely to firearm, weapon, and self defense cases, although he did handle a number of police liability cases as a plaintiff's attorney. His experience includes being a Florida prosecutor, police legal advisor, Federal Firearms Licensee (FFL), as well as being both an NRA certified firearms instructor, and NRA Refuse to be a Victim instructor. He is regarded by many as the foremost authority on legal issues involving firearms, weapons, and self defense in Florida. His book, "Florida Firearms -- Law, Use & Ownership" has sold over 230,000 copies, is often referred to as the "bible" on Florida firearm laws, and is now in its 9th edition, with the latest updated printing being in June 2017. The book covers all laws, Florida & Federal, related to firearms, weapons, and self defense (except hunting), and also has short sections on Georgia & Alabama gun laws written by two top attorneys from those states. The book is updated free on his website at least twice yearly, and the updates are incorporated into the print versions in greater detail. Mr. Gutmacher also publishes an ebook version on Kindle that only covers self defense, and is a shortened version of the last two chapters of the print book. Mr. Gutmacher continues to be featured on both national and local television and radio, including Nightline, and frequently is called to comment on issues and news events related to this specialized area. He also writes a featured legal column for the Florida Association of State Troopers, and was referral counsel for the NRA, GOA, USCCA, and other pro-Second Amendment organizations before his retirement.
